Gales Ferry, CT - Brown seniors Whitney Keefe (Wellesley, MA) and Stephanie Carmack (Pawcatuck, CT) qualified for the Zone 1 Championship as individuals, finishing second in Open Flat and Walk Trot, respectively, at the Region 1 Championship on Saturday. They were joined by Amanda Forte '02, who finished second in Alumnae Flat, in qualifying from the show, at which no team score is kept and the top two riders in each class qualify for Zones. The Bears also had a few near misses. The closest call was sophomore Elizabeth Giliberti (Washington, DC), who pinned third in Intermediate Fences. Sophomore Rachel Griffith (Merrimack, NH) also narrowly missed qualifying, pinning fourth in Novice Fences. Among the other highlights was a Coaches' Class, in which the entry fee for each coach was donated to charity. Brown Head Coach Michaela Scanlon pinned fourth in the competition. Next Saturday, the Bears will compete as a team, as well as be represented by their three individual riders, at the Zone 1 Championship at the Mt. Holyoke Equestrian Center in South Hadley, Mass. Brown will compete with the champions of the other three regions in Zone 1, with the top two teams moving on to the IHSA National Horse Show in Los Angeles.
